Sport and Performance Nutritionist

Athletes are pushing their bodies to the maximum in training and I love to see those hours turned into serious reward at game/race time.

Did you know 4% dehydration = 20-30% loss of speed and power?

Research continually shows athletes perform better in a fed vs fasted state, it has a direct correlation with body composition, performance, energy, and recovery (Holtzman & Ackerman, 2021). Yet many athletes skip pre-training/pre-game fuelling as it makes them feel unwell.  It’s all about timing, learning the fundamental principles that are relevant throughout your athletic journey, and an investment in becoming the best version of yourself.

Consultations are individualised, and designed to achieve your performance targets, related to your specific sporting requirements, gender, age, and level. Nutrition is further specified to encompass pre – and post-training/ game day fuelling, rest, and recovery.

Whilst I have a specific interest in football (particularly rugby league), power sports and marathons, I can assist with any sport-related goals, having completed 6 months of Naturopathic Sports Nutrition mentoring with Kira Sutherland in 2023.

Do any of these scenarios sound familar?

  • Frequent illness pattern, difficulty maintaining energy around the menstrual cycle?

  • Tired from training but having problems falling asleep? Brain foggy after training, and lasting through the day? Daytime fatigue and energy crashes? Poor mood and stress tolerance?

  • Sick of running out of energy during training sessions.

  • Got your nutrition plan wrong on race/game day and your race/game suffered.

  • You want to increase lean muscle mass but nothings working.

The key to achieving the training adaptations required include targeted strategies to correctly fuel the body at the right time, while facilitating rest, recovery and repair.

The initial consultation

Before we meet for the first time, I'll ask you to complete a preliminary health questionnaire and provide any recent medical test results.

During our first consultation I’ll take time to understand your sport and specific goals. We’ll talk about your sleep, stress and emotional wellbeing, gut and liver health, diet and lifestyle.

I will formulate a detailed plan for the best way to begin which you will receive within 24 hours. This plan will include practical nutritional recommendations to fuel your body at the right time, and with the right macronutrient ratios.

Treatment plan

Now that you have a treatment plan, you can start implementing my recommendations. I generally allow 4 weeks for this stage, to allow adequate time to see how the recommendations are working and identify any obstacles.

Follow-up consultations

Four weeks later we will meet for your first follow-up consultation. By now you will have implemented the diet and lifestyle changes and possibly started on nutritional supplements.

We may need to adjust the prescription of supplements, set new goals for your treatment, and schedule future appointments. I will give you an idea of how long it will take to see results.

Ongoing support

As a minimum, I recommend at least 2 follow up appointments over three months before we get you on a maintenance plan. Once you are happy with your sports nutrition plan many of my clients check in with me every six months or as needed to adjust the treatment plan.

FAQs

What is sports nutrition?

Sports Nutrition is the study and practice of nutrition and diet to improve one’s athletic performance. Sports nutrition should be considered an athlete’s most important resource. If an athlete doesn’t have enough fuel or hydration, he/she will not function optimally. Its the 1-percenters that really make a difference in achieving your goals.

How can sports nutrition help me?

Sports Nutrition plays a crucial role in sports performance. The goal is to ensure athletes are well-hydrated, well-fueled and well-nourished. It helps by:

  • Enhancing sports performance by providing a well-planned nutritious diet that needs the athletes nutritional needs, along with appropriate timing for meals to ensure optimum performance and recovery.

  • Providing energy required for training and game/race day.

  • Facilitating recovery and maintaining muscle mass after intense activity.

How much does an initial consultation cost?

The initial consultation costs $175 for 90 minutes. Subsequent appointments cost $125 (60 minutes) or $65 (30 minutes). Health fund rebates are available for health funds that cover nutrition (please contact your health fund to find out if they cover Nutrition).

What does an initial consultation include?

  • Diet and lifestyle assessment and health review

  • Detailed personalised treatment plan

  • Functional testing if necessary*

  • Prescription of nutritional and/or therapeutic supplements*

* Please note: Functional testing and supplements not included in consultation price.

What is covered in follow up appointments?

Each 60 minute follow-up consultation covers:

  • Modified treatment plan for the next stage of treatment

  • Motivational coaching and education

  • Adjust or repeat prescription of supplements

  • Implement the next stage of your treatment

As a minimum, I recommend at least 2-3 follow up appointments over three months, but many of my clients continue to work with me for longer to keep working on their health goals. Additional consultations are available depending on your circumstances.

Maintenance consultations are 30-minute mini-appointments ($65) as needed to check-in, make minor modifications to your treatment plan, re-prescribe, and review pathology / investigations.
